Zero Waste Heroes: Tim the Bin
No-one likes to look at litter, but how many of us see it on the street and think of it as someone else’s problem? Tim Beattie is someone who actually does something about it.
Here in Aldbourne we are very fortunate to have a number of people who take care of the village and work hard to keep it tidy. Tim has taken this to the next level. It all started when he noticed the area by the seat in the Square often had litter around it. Being a friendly person, he started chatting to the youngsters who were sitting on the bench. He asked them if they could put their litter in one of the Wiltshire Council bins which weren’t too far away. They explained that the Council bins were full and when Tim checked this out he realised they were right.
After a few more conversations, and after Tim had put a rubbish bag on the telephone kiosk (which was used), Tim decided to make a feature bin that would mark the Dr Who series that had been made in the village. A Tardis seemed like the perfect choice.
Tim is no stranger to hard work. Not only did he complete the Tardis bin, he went on to make a Dalek bin which took 10 months to make. The bins were so popular that the BBC took an interest.
The Tardis has been keeping Aldbourne tidy for 11 years now and was joined by the Dalek in 2012. However, not only did Tim make the bins, he empties them as well, every week. That is why Tim is our first Carbon Neutral Aldbourne zero waste hero. He saw a problem, worked out a solution by talking to other people, put the solution into practice and carried through on the solution.
What a brilliant example for all of us. Thank you Tim.
