Declare a climate emergency

The global scientific consensus is that humans have already caused serious climate change, the impacts of which are being felt around the world. Global temperatures have already increased by 1 degree Celsius from pre-industrial levels. Atmospheric CO2 levels are above 400 parts per million. This far exceeds the 350 ppm deemed to be a safe level for humanity and will continue to rise if no action is taken.

In order to reduce the chance of runaway Global Warming and limit the effects of Climate Breakdown, it is imperative that we as a species reduce our emissions.

The UK Government has recognised this by declaring a climate emergency and commiting to net-zero emissions by 2050. Local councils across the UK have made similar declarations with many committing to reach targets much sooner.

In February 2019 Wiltshire County Council declared a climate emergency and more recently Aldbourne Parish Council has done the same.

But they can’t do it alone – we all need to accept responsibility for living sustainably.

Addressing climate change, habitat destruction and resource depletion are issues that we should all be taking a stand on. It is important for the residents of Aldbourne to support the Parish Council and Wiltshire Council and commit to reducing emissions as quickly as possible.

You can start by signing our climate change declaration*

  1. I acknowledge that there is a climate emergency.
  2. I understand that current plans and actions are not enough. We need to do all we can as individuals to decarbonise our society.
  3. I support the aims of Carbon Neutral Aldbourne to make Aldbourne Carbon Neutral by 2030.
  4. I will do what I can to reduce my carbon footprint.
