GENERAL ELECTION – STOP PRESS

Last week we brought you a blog written by Carbon Neutral Aldbourne’s Ros Oswald who has been tracking down this year’s candidates for East Wiltshire to find out their views on important environmental issues. This week we bring you an update based on the newly published scores from Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace.

Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace have joined together to assess the green claims of the different parties now that the party manifestos have been published. You can see the results here.

Here are the scores showing the differences from before and after the manifestos. Just to make it more interesting the scoring system used by Friends of the Earth before the manifestos were published was based on marks out of 100. After the publications the scoring system was changed to marks out of 40! To make life easier we have converted the earlier scores so you can see easily what has happened.

Its interesting that the Greens and Lib Dems have firmed up on their plans whilst Labour and the Conservatives have moved in the opposite direction. We all know that promises are not the same as actions but the Conservative score of 5 out of 40 does look very low by any standards.

If the polls are correct it will be the Labour Party promises that will be the most significant for the environment after the Election. The party has put the emphasis on growth to deliver on its promises. Action on the climate and transitioning to a cleaner economy are ideal ways to generate growth. If the Labour Party grasps this opportunity its ambitions could be fulfilled in a way that benefits us all.
